IoT Access Control and Smart Building Security Basics
JANUARY 21, 2025

An access-control project usually starts with the reader: PIN, card, or biometric. The failure that shows up later is the network. The reader cannot reach the controller, the camera cannot reach the recorder, or the lock falls back to a local mode nobody tested.
Treat the building systems as their own network. Door locks, access control, intrusion detection, CCTV, and asset tracking are part of IDEA SENSE. These systems should not share a guest SSID with phones. They need switching with a known address plan, power where the device actually mounts, and a path that stays up when the guest Wi-Fi is busy. Wireless is acceptable for some sensors. A door controller that must make a decision during a network blip needs a design that says what happens in that blip.
IDEANET can supply that path: the LAN, the Wi-Fi, the firewall, and the internet or VPN that lets a multi-property operator see more than one building. A centralized command center is part of the IDEA SENSE scope when the customer wants one pane for several sites. It is a project, not a default checkbox.
Cameras and analytics (AI visitor analytics in a hospital, or AI CCTV in a building) add bandwidth and retention. Size the uplink and the storage before the camera count is frozen. Colocation or an on-premise recorder are both valid. Pick one in the statement of work so the recording has an owner.
