Bandwidth Planning for Hotels During Peak Season

OCTOBER 18, 2024

Peak season in a hotel is a bandwidth problem with a calendar. The circuit that felt adequate in a quiet month is the one guests blame when three events and a full house stream at once. Point-of-sale, door locks, and the property system are on that same night, and they should not be competing with video.

Split the traffic before you buy a bigger pipe. Guest internet on its own SSID and its own policy. Hotel systems on a separate network that still works when the guest side is saturated. IDEANET's hospitality work is built that way: dedicated internet or broadband for the building, managed Wi-Fi for the floors, and IDEA+ TV or smart room only if the property wants those services on the building LAN.

Size for the busy hour, not the average. Count devices, not rooms: several devices per occupied room, plus the meeting floor. A banquet that adds a temporary SSID needs a radio plan, not only a password on a slide. If the property has a second link, decide in advance which traffic fails over. SD-WAN can do that. It has to be designed, not switched on during the event.

Support matters more in that week than in the annual average. Confirm the helpdesk path and which office covers a visit before the first arrival day. Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali are the contact points. A property elsewhere is covered according to the contract, not by assumption.

None of this requires a published price per room. Ask sales for a design based on the room count, the meeting space, and whether IPTV or smart building is in scope.
