Hybrid Work Still Depends on Last-Mile Quality
SEPTEMBER 29, 2024

Hybrid work moved the application to a cloud and left the complaint in the branch. A video call or a virtual desktop fails, and the monitoring in the data center looks healthy. The fault is often the last mile: upload too small, loss on the access circuit, or jitter the VPN cannot hide.
Dedicated internet access is the enterprise answer when the branch has to behave like an office. Broadband is a reasonable answer for a smaller site if the upload and the contention are acceptable for the apps in use. A home office on consumer broadband will not match a DIA circuit. Say that when you write the policy, instead of debugging the VPN for a month.
L2 or L3 VPN, or SD-WAN across two links, is how the branch joins the rest of the company. A split tunnel sends some traffic directly to the cloud and some back to head office. It only helps if someone has designed the split. Cloud interconnect is the cleaner path when the workload sits on a specific cloud, including a hyperscaler partner such as Tencent Cloud. The interconnect does not fix a weak branch circuit. It fixes the path after the traffic has left the branch.
What to measure at the site, before you blame the application: download and upload, loss, and latency toward the VPN gateway and toward the cloud region you actually use. IDEANET can provide the circuit, the CPE, and the VPN. The application vendor still owns the application. Keep those two lines separate in the design.
